Schema Therapy
Schema therapy, developed by Jeffrey Young in 1990, is an integrative treatment approach combining cognitive, behavioural, object relations, gestalt, constructivism, attachment models, and psychoanalysis (Young, Klosko, & Weishaar, 2003).
It was originally designed to treat clients with more complex presentations (sometimes referred to as personality disorders), chronic depression and anxiety, and other difficult problems that were not responding well to traditional cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).
Schema therapy focuses on identifying and modifying early maladaptive schemas (self-defeating emotional and cognitive patterns) and schema modes (moment-to-moment emotional states) that are thought to underlie chronic psychological disorders.
The goal is to help patients develop healthier schemas and coping strategies to improve their interpersonal relationships and overall functioning.
Whilst initially developed for people with complex presentations there is now widespread recognition that schema therapy is a highly effective model for working with a range of presenting difficulties.
CBT
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that looks at your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and helps to change some of these to manage your problems.
A key part of this is identifying the negative thinking patterns that you may feel trapped in, helping you to break free from these and to feel better.
CBT focuses on equipping you with the tools to address current problems in your life and relieve the symptoms you’re facing, before making links to your past and how your beliefs started.
EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a comprehensive psychotherapy that helps you process and recover from past experiences that are affecting your mental health and wellbeing.
It involves using side to side eye movements combined with talk therapy in a specific and structured format.
EMDR helps you process the negative images, emotions, beliefs and body sensations associated with traumatic memories that seem to be stuck. These can contribute to a range of mental health problems.
EMDR helps you to see things from a different perspective and relieves the symptoms that you were suffering.
